4 Pet Dogs Poisoned In Belait
By Azlan Othman

Kuala Belait - A dog owner in the Belait District was shocked to find four of her dogs dead in her residence.

Citing the fact that they were not stray animals, she questioned the rights of her pets.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, she recalled the incident on February 17, around 4 pm.

"A man wearing a uniform approached me to ask if I were the owner of the dogs. He then advised me to chain them."

Since she did not have any chains at the time, she told the man she would get them the following day and chains them up afterwards.

"The next day, at around 9.30 am, I came out of my house to feed the dogs; it was then that I saw them - two adults and a pair of two-month-old male puppies - lying in my compound, dead," she said

"It is natural for dogs to bark, guard their owners' properties and protect them from danger.

My dogs were not known to bite. They only barked if anyone irritated them by throwing things at them," she said.

She added, "My dogs never disturbed people, and I cleaned them everyday. I had them to protect my house against burglaries."

After the tragic discovery, she filed reports to the Belait Municipal Board and Management Service Department.

She said the authorities at the Municipal Board, who assured her that the department only disposed of stray dogs, are currently looking into the matter.

The Belait Municipal Board recently urged licensed dog owners in the district to keep their dogs in the compound, adding that dogs who are allowed to roam free in the neighbourhood should always be leashed and accompanied by the owners.

The department said registered dogs must wear collars with tags that detail their licences, and reminded owners that dogs roaming outside their homes without tags is an offence and owners could face a fine of $250 or one-month imprisonment.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Board said many complaints have been received from parents who claimed that their children were attacked by unchained dogs. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
