Imam Urges Bruneians To Maintain
Nation's Integrity
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Bruneians need to uphold their nation's independence
for generations for an everlasting peace and stability, an Imam said
yesterday in a Friday sermon.
"Independence since 21 years ago
indicated that we did not lose Brunei as a whole. We still take
control of it although part of it has been lost to the hand of others
as stated in its history," the Imam added.
Brunei celebrated its 21st National
Day anniversary on February 23, the main highlight being a parade and
field performance at the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien in
the capital.
"Twenty-one years ago, we resumed our
independence and became a sovereign state among the international
sovereign community," said the Imam.
"With such power, we uphold Islam as
a religion inherited for generations. We live in a peaceful manner and
continue to develop the nation for the prosperity and security of the
nation and the people."
"The content of the proclamation of
independence stated three main pillars, in that with the ever-seeking
guidance and blessing of Allah, we would forever maintain the nation
as a Malay Islamic Monarchy, which is independent, sovereign and
democratic upon the teachings of Islam based on 'Ahli Sunnah Wal
Jemaah' and not based on any philosophy and human invention," added
the Imam.
"It is also based upon the principle
of liberty, trust and justice."
"Secondly, we would strive to achieve
peace and stability, welfare and happiness for the people and thirdly,
we would maintain friendly relations with the international community
on the principle of mutual respect for the independence, sovereignty,
equality and territorial integrity of any nations free from external
interference. All these are our aspirations in living as a nation," he
said.
Imams also stated that the
independent generation would shape Brunei as a continuing generation
and shoulder the trust in a credible manner.
Meanwhile, Friday sermons at other
mosques touched on the anniversary of the Royal Brunei Police Force.
