International Day, one of the most
anticipated cultural events of the year at Jerudong International
School (JIS), was held yesterday.
The school community celebrated and
enjoyed the cultural diversity of its staff and students and as
learned about culture around the world.
It was also a charity event, which
bound the members of the school as a community and raised awareness on
common humanity.
Many students, staff and parents came
to the school yesterday in their national dress or costume of a famous
national character.
The celebration began with a
school-wide Parade of Nations, in an Olympic-style ceremony; different
'nations' entertained the audience with a brief musical, dramatic or
dance performance.
Parents joined students listening to
a debate by Year 7 students on the issue 'Rich countries should pay
off the debts of poorer countries'.
Chief judge was the assistant CEO of
the Brunei Economic Development Board, Aziz Abd Latip.
After the morning break, the
International Showcase Concert in the school gymnasium featured song
and dance performances representing various countries.
The school presented the Royal Brunei
Armed Forces Pipes and Drums (Serunai and Tambur), Gulintangan Music
(Gamelan Orchestra), Indian Music and Dance, Irish Dancing, the Year 5
and 6 School Choir, and African song and dance.
Over the past few months, the school
has organised fundraising events for the Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund.
During the showcase concert, Mr John Price, the principal of Jerudong
International School, presented the guest of honour, Permanent
Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Hj Jemat bin
Ampal with a $15,000 cheque for the Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund.
Parents and students sampled the
culinary delights at the International Food Fair coordinated by the
Parent Teacher Community Group, while the school jazz band regaled the
audience with some music.
The JIS International Day ended with
a Dragon and Lion Dance performance presented by the students from
Chung Hwa Middle School, Kuala Belait.
