Fifteen dead in Tikrit car bomb
Tikrit -
A car bomb exploded inside the police headquarters in Saddam Hussein's
home town of Tikrit today, killing at least 15 people and wounding 22
others, police and witnesses said.
Twenty cars were set ablaze after the
massive blast, sending clouds of smoke into the sky. At least 10
charred bodies could be scene laying on the ground, splattered with
pools of blood and bits of human flesh.
Police Lieutenant Sha'alan Allawi
said the bomber drove a vehicle into a parking lot inside the police
building and detonated it. Several ambulances raced to the scene,
ferrying casualties to a local hospital.
Captain Hakim Mohammed, part of a
force protecting Tikrit's main hospital where most of the casualties
were brought, said 15 people died and 22 were wounded.
U.S. troops sealed off the area
immediately after the blast, preventing people from entering. U.S.
troops also set up checkpoints across the city, searching vehicles.
Major Neil Harper of the U.S. army confirmed the attack was a car
bomb, but he had no other details. Tikrit is located 80 miles north of
the Iraqi capital. Insurgents have relentlessly attacked U.S. and
Iraqi security forces with car bombs throughout the past year. -- Guardian News
