Professional Counselling Seen As
Partner In Brunei Public Service

Begawan – Brunei is seeing professional counselling, especially
within the public service, as a strategic partner and no longer as one
carrying a supporting role.
This was stated by Dato Haji Abdul
Jalil, the Head of the Counselling Unit, in an interview with RTB
yesterday.
In a number of countries, counselling
is now seen as a strategic partner, and Brunei is no exception, he
said.
The establishment of the Counselling
Services Unit reflects the government's concern for new approaches to
human resource development.
The aims of the Counselling Unit is
to ensure that the wellness and well-being of the Civil Service. It
conducts capacity-building programs, prevention and intervention
programs as well as intervention and rehabilitation.
Apart from giving counselling to
government employees, the Unit is also helping anyone who is facing
maybe personal or office problems or having conflict with officemates.
Dato
Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil also wishes to address the issue of
embarrassment to accept counselling services.
A number of people often have
misconceptions about counselling, which often stops them from seeking
counselling.
Part of the society thought that
revealing problems to counsellors is a weakness. But, nowadays, those
who dare to tell and sort out their problems with the help of
counsellors are considered brave and matured.
Earlier, 29 participants received
their certificates after attending the three-day 'Emotional
Intelligence' workshop.
Presenting the certificates was Awang
Haji Mohammad Taib bin Dato Hulubalang Haji Abdul Wahab, the Acting
Deputy Director-General of the Civil Services.
