Fetes
By CT Hj Mahmod & M K Anwar
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The rumbling of patriotic chants coming from the
heart of the capital was yesterday heard across the nation as Brunei
celebrated its 21st National Day.
His Majesty the Sultan and Yang
Di-Pertuan of Brunei attended the mass
celebration at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien, in which his
loyal subjects staged numerous spectacular field performances.
Accompanied by His Royal Highness
the Crown Prince Pg Muda Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah and other members of
the royal family, the monarch's arrival was greeted by the blissful
beats of the 'Hadrah' performed by students.
The field performances reflected
the rationale of the theme - 'Bersepadu Memperkasa Mandiri Bangsa'
which translates as `Together We Strengthen National Self-Reliance'
through three segments: Self-Reliance Monument, Young Generation and
Flora.
Each segment displayed a vibrant
symbol of its own definition that was performed by high-spirited
students and uniformed personnel.
Over 8,000 people from all levels
of society were involved in the colourful National Day celebration,
which reflected their sense of national pride and spirit of
patriotism.
Participants from uniformed
agencies, ministries, departments, districts, private sector, higher
academic institutions, colleges, schools and non-governmental
organisations were involved in a march past that was led by the
carriers of the national flag.
Participating in this performance
were a total of 12 ministries and departments, together with six
nongovernmental associations and seven leading private companies, as
well as 13 uniformed agencies.
It was not until the declaration of
the National Day oath taken by the loyal subjects who had assembled
at the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien, that the sense of
national pride was felt in the air. --
