Celebrations
By Sonia K, Helena M. Mahathir & James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A large number of tourists flocked to the capital
yesterday morning to witness the 21st National Day celebrations.
These tourists, mostly from Europe, gathered at the Taman Haji Sir
Omar Ali Saifuddien to see His Majesty the Sultan and Yang
Di-Pertuan of Brunei and the spectacular field
performances and parade.
During interviews with the
tourists, the Bulletin found "catching a glimpse of His Majesty was
exciting" a frequent response.
A Dutch family of four, who arrived
in the country two days ago without realising it was National Day
yesterday, could not believe their luck.
They said it was once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to witness the Sultan as well as a large-scale
celebration.
Eric from Switzerland and Adam from
England, who arrived in Brunei four days ago, were impressed by the
colourful performances and the procession.
They both agreed that the country
has a unique culture with friendly and polite people, adding that
on top of being a close-knit community, Brunei is also a clean and
safe place to live.
June and Anthony Burgess, a senior
couple from England, were first-time visitors to the country.
They told the Bulletin that they
were delighted by the amazing performances at the capital.
The added
that the parade reminded them of a similar event taking place during
Queen of England's birthday celebrations.
They were also impressed with the
enormity of the celebrations, with students lining up along the
roads to greet the arrival of His Majesty. --
