Bandar Seri
Begawan - In a true show of patriotic spirit, thousands of
spectators turned up at Taman Haji Sir Muda Cmar Ali Saifuddien in
the capital as early as 6am yesterday to witness the 21st National
Day celebrations.
Feelings of excitement were clearly
evident as everyone, young and old, waited for the arrival of His
Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, and the
programmes to begin.
This year's theme is "Bersepadu
Memperkasa Mandiri Bangsa" or "Together In Strengthening National
Self-Reliance."
People from all walks of life could
be seen lining along the roadsides in the heart of Bandar Seri
Begawan, especially schoolchildren who were geared up to greet
Sultan and the royal entourage upon their arrival by
enthusiastically waving miniature flags. Common sights during the
event included groups of families and friends gathered together, not
wanting to miss the opportunity of taking a closer look at the
activities.
A man from Kg Mentiri said he makes
it a point to watch the National Day celebrations with his wife and
children every year.
They enjoyed the joyous atmosphere
and were also impressed with the kind of preparations and efforts
put into the event, resulting in a colourful and spectacular display
of field performances, as well as the parade.
Many people, comprising of Bruneian
citizens, expatriates and visitors, as well as local and foreign
media from around the world were seen taking snapshots and video
recordings.
Some 20,000 people, including 8,000
students from across the country, participated in the programmes.
These included performances, a showcase of the National Day logo,
singing of patriotic songs and the grand finale or parades, which
ended with a mass gathering on the field. --
