The field performances, which reflected this year's theme were performed by uniformed organisations, firemen, the Royal Brunei Armed Forces and secondary school students.

The field performances were comprised of three segments.

The first segment was staged by personnel of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces and Fire Brigades as well as secondary students who took the form of the self-reliance pillar.

The formation symbolises that Bruneians are diligent, hard working and united, which is the foundation for progress and development.

The second display was enacted by youth groups, who as the bridge to the future, would carry on the country's efforts towards attaining excellence.

As today's young generation, their cooperation is sought in nation building.

Meanwhile, the last segment portrayed Brunei’s pure aspiration to reflect the nation's hope with the performance of students, who formed a flora-like formation in line with the National Development Programme.

The formation signifies that Brunei is fertile and clean environment.

The march past in front of the Royal Dais was led by a parade of a giant-sized national flag.

The participants consisted of personnel from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, the Royal Brunei Police Force, uniformed personnel, ministries and department, special people team comprising of Paraplegics and Physically Disabled Association or PAPDA, Brunei Darussalam National Blind People, Disable Children Association, KACA, teams from districts office, higher learning institution, colleges, schools, non-government association and the private sector.

His Majesty in his titah in conjunction with this year’s National Day Celebration had touched on the task of the Civil Service machinery to bring the country towards progress and development blessed by Allah and appreciated by every individual on Brunei’s soil.

The Monarch reminded every one that all government agencies should be ever prepared to carry out their respective obligation.

According to His Majesty, the platform for them to implement this has been laid down by way of the Civil Service 21st Century Vision.

The Monarch spoke of a stable national development, which relies on Civil Service machinery that can fulfill the people's needs and aspirations.

The pledge of loyalty in conjunction with the National Day was led by Haji Syed Mohammad Yassin bin Syed Anayatullah Shah, a graduate of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

The oath renewed a pledge of loyalty and solidarity to His Majesty as well as his leadership towards maintaining the sovereignty, peace and security of the nation.

The National Day theme advocates denouncement of reliance on others. Instead, individuals should be self-reliant.

Individuals should also be highly-resolved and diligent in making efforts, and to do away with always seeking help from others or expecting special privileges in  confronting the challenges of life.

Youths must be instilled with the spirit of self-reliance, which coupled with patriotism, will enable them to become more resilient in withstanding the tests of time. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
