Memperkasa Mandiri Bangsa" or
Together in Strengthening National Self Reliance.
It was 21 years ago to this date
when it was proclaimed that Brunei Darussalam would resume full
international responsibility as a sovereign and independent nation
among the international community of nations and this proclamation
was celebrated and upheld in yesterday's celebration. |
The word "Mandiri" or Self Reliance'
in this year's National Day theme is a testament to the nation's hope
to further strive and work both domestically and internationally.
This year's theme is also a
continuation of the ideas and beliefs of patriotism that formed the
core theme of last year's celebration.
The second segment of the field
performance was titled `Young Generations'/ It was participated in by
more than 1,500 eager students from different schools in the country.
This segment symbolised the young
generation as the next generation that will propel the country further
like what their forefathers did.
The final segment of the field
performance was titled `Flora', which highlighted the country's dream
to create a nation that is prosperous, developed and peaceful.
The colourful formations depicted the
nation's flora and fauna, its peaceful surroundings and balanced
development.
The field performances were
accompanied by several patriotic songs.
One of the highlights of the event
was the march past and assembly of several government ministries and
departments, uniformed agencies, private sector, schools and other
non-government associations.
A giant national flag and the
national day logo were carried into the Taman.
A total of 46 higher academic
institutions, colleges and schools made up the large part of the
marching parade. After all the participants marched inside the Taman,
the National Day oath was read.
The oath further renewed the
commitment, loyalty and solidarity of the people to His Majesty and
his leadership and at the same time to further maintain the
sovereignty, peace and security of Brunei Darussalam.
Preparations for the National Day
celebrations have been underway for several weeks and the enthusiasm
shown by participants was conspicuous when they finally delivered
yesterday.
The National Day celebration reached
its climax with an overall display of patriotism by participants and
the public present at the Taman. Colourful balloons were released from
around the Taman and a special centrepiece in the middle of the Taman
took shape.
More than 20,000 people attended the
event that was broadcast live on television, beamed through the Brunei
satellite channel. --
