Bangladesh High Commission Celebrates Martyrs Day

Bandar Seri Begawan - The High Commission of the People's Republic of Bangladesh in the country observed the Martyrs Day and International Mother Language Day in a befitting manner on Monday.

To mark the special occasion, a special programme was organised yesterday where the national flag of Bangladesh was hoisted half-mast by Mr MA Hakim, High Commissioner of Bangladesh, at the premises of the high commission in the capital.

A doa mahfil and a meeting, presided by the high commissioner, were also held, joined by some 60 Bangladeshi expatriates in the country.

During the meeting, messages from the President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Bangladesh were read out by Mr MA Hakim and First Secretary Mr ASM Waheeduzzaman.

Speakers also touched upon the significance of the day, various aspects of the historic language movement and importance of mother language.

The high commissioner paid tribute to the martyrs of the historic language movement and hailed UNESCO's decision to declare February 21st as the International Mother Language Day.

The day proceeded with a presentation of prizes and certificates to winners of an art competition on February 20, participated by children of Bangladeshi expatriates.

It was followed by a Doa for the souls of the martyrs and for the prosperity of Bangladesh. A musical soiree concluded the event. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
