UBD Lecturers Present Papers At Jakarta Conference
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan - Four local lecturers from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) presented working papers during their participation in the 3rd Annual Linguistic Conference (KOLITA-3) held last week at the Universitas Katolik (Unika) Atmajaya, Jakarta, Indonesia.

Organised by the university's Language and Culture Research Centre, the two-day congress held on February 16-17 unveiled some 40 working papers from linguistics experts of Indonesia and Brunei.

The four lecturers from the Department of Malay Language and Linguistics, UBD are Dr. Mataim Bakar, Dr. Hj. Jaludin Hj. Chuchu, Dr. Hj. Azmi Abdullah and Dr. Yabit Alas. They presented working papers entitled "Nasal Plus Obstruent Cluster Morpheme-Internally: From An Optimality-Theoretic Account", "Pemanjangan Konsonan dan Inovasi Leksikal: Bukti Hubungan Brunei-Sambas", "Adverbial: Pertalian Unsur dalam Struktur" and "Sejarah Gelaran Awang dan Abang", respectively.

According to Dr. Hj Jaludin, linguistic experts from Brunei, who are able to present working papers with local themes, are now much sought-after by regional institutions.

"Our thoughts and theories were no longer affordable to be neglected by regional education centres as we were also able to present our views from local angles and perspectives," said Dr. Hj Jaludin. "This means our intellectuals are now on the same par with experts from foreign countries."

"It is an encouraging trend and hopefully we will continue to contribute ideas, thoughts and visions to regional and international knowledge institutions," he added.

The linguistic conference on language and the teaching of language was first organised by Unika Atmajaya in 2003

Among the linguistic aspects delivered at the annual conference were phonology, morphology, syntax, semantic, pragmatic, psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic, language and culture, language text, error analysis, speech analysis, teaching of language, and language achievement. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
