No To Stray Dogs In Belait
By Hjh Saemah Zulkefll

Kuala Belait - Dog owners with pet licences must ensure the canines do not roam about unless they are on a leash and in the company of the owners, a Municipal Board official said.

Licensed dogs must be made to wear collars with tags clearly showing their numbered identification. Owners who fail to comply would be committing an offence under the Dog Act, said Awang Haji Ali bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Acting Chairman of the Kuala Belait and Seria Municipal Board.

Those committing the offence will be penalised $250 in default one-month imprisonment, he said.

This issue was raised following complaints from dog owners who found their dogs dead in their compounds, apparently poisoned.

He said operations against stray dogs and the possible diseases they may carry are routinely done in and around housing areas.

He told the Bulletin they had received complaints from parents whose children had been chased by stray dogs.

"Neighbours had also complained about licensed and stray dogs that roam freely and cause damage to property outside the house," he said.

Awang Haji Ali stressed enforcement officers from the Municipal Board Department will take swift action on dogs found roaming the area freely, and even on licensed ones.
