Bangladesh Celebrates Language
Martyrs Day
Bandar Seri
Begawan - February 21, the glorious and unforgettable "Language
Martyrs Day," is observed by Bangladeshis throughout the country and
abroad to pay respect and homage to the sacred souls of the martyrs of
Language Movement of 1952.
Blood was shed on this day at the
Central Shahid Minar (near Dhaka Medical College Hospital) to
establish Bangla as a state language.
The nationals of Bangladesh living
home and abroad pay homage to the martyrs by placing floral wreaths at
the Shahid Minar.
The love and respect that these
martyrs had aroused for Bengali mother tongue and culture eventually
laid the foundation of the war of liberation of Bangladesh.
The decision to observe Feb 21 as the
International Mother Language Day by the United Nations Educational,
Scientific Organisation (Unesco) at the General Conference has brought
fresh glory and prestige to Bangladesh in making significant strides
towards peace, progress and prosperity at home. It is a great
achievement on the part of Bangladesh.
The International Mother Language Day
is not only for Bangladesh; rather it is for all languages all over
the world. In spite of that, Bangladesh cannot but feel proud when
February 21 has been chosen as the International Mother Language Day.
Bangladesh officially sent a proposal
to Unesco requesting the world body to adopt a resolution declaring
February 21 as International Mother Language Day.
The Language Division of Unesco
marked the proposal from the government of Bangladesh as Draft
Resolution 35 and sent to Commission2 for consideration. The
commission unanimously recommended the proposal for presentation for
the plenary session of the
General conference of the Unesco. On
Nov. 17, 1999, February 21 was declared in the general conference as
the International Mother Language Day.
The Unesco resolution proposed by
Bangladesh and adopted at the general conference affirms that
acknowledgement and respect for cultural diversity in the area of
language inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and
dialogue. (The High Commission of the People's Republic of Bangladesh)
