Minister Scrutinizes New Building Construction Project

Bangar - Pehin Dato Awang Haji Zakaria, the Minister of Communications, made a visit to the Belait district yesterday to take a closer look at the new building construction site for four departments under the ministry.

The visit was also intended to gather information on communication issues that arose in the remote areas.

On arrival at the Labi Post Office, Pehin Dato Awang Haji Zakaria was welcomed by Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yussof, the Belait District Officer.

Here, the Minister also held an unofficial meeting with the Penghulu Mukim and kampung ketua to foster closer relationship between the village heads and government officials apart from hearing issues regarding communications.

Among the services provided at the post office today are sale of stamps and receiving and processing of air mail, payments of bills, drivers' licence and road tax renewals.

Pehin then took a look at the progress of works at the construction site for the four departments.

The nearly $2 million project began construction in March last year. It is expected to be completed by May this year.

The complex, which is built near the old office building, will house the Immigration, Custom and Excise, Marine and the Ports Departments.

Pehin and delegation later proceeded to the Marine Department.

The department is responsible for processing licenses for ships and fishing boats, collecting taxes and granting port permits.

The Marine department is currently being manned by a staff of six under the supervision of the shipping superintendent.

The Minister continued his visit in the morning at the weather forecast office of the Meteorological Services Department.

The department is expected to set up a new automatic weather observation station sometime this year as part of its effort to give an early warning in order to prevent any disaster.

The Minister also visited other departments in the afternoon. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
