Crown Prince Awards CIPTA
Competition Winners

Begawan - His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah,
the Deputy Sultan, yesterday morning attended the inauguration and
award ceremony for the Crown Prince Creative, Innovative Products and
Technical Advancements (CIPTA) Awards competition.
Upon arrival at the International
Convention Centre, His Royal Highness was greeted by Pehin Dato Awang
Haji Abdul Aziz, the Minister of Education; Pehin Dato Awang Haji
Suyoi, the Deputy Minister of Education; Dato Paduka Sheikh Haji
Adrian, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education; and,
Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hamdilah bin Haji Abdul Wahab, the Managing
Director of Brunei Liquefied Natural Gas (BLNG).
The function began with the recital
of the Surah Al-Fatihah led by Pehin Dato Paduka Awang Haji Suhaili.
Awang
Dr. Haji Kassim bin Haji Daud, the acting director of the Brunei
Institute of Technology, in his welcoming speech, said that among the
objectives of the Crown Prince CIPTA Awards is to encourage innovative
creations in Brunei.It is also designed to give recognition to
creative talents.
It is also hoped that the Crown
Prince CIPTA Awards will inspire the youth in the country to develop
products, processes and creative technology for commercial purposes.
Dato
Paduka Haji Hamdillah, the Managing Director of BLNG, who is also the
co-organiser of the Crown Prince CIPTA Awards 2005 in his welcoming
speech, said the competition is an encouragement to instill a sense of
creativity especially among students, young scientists, technologists,
engineers and young entrepreneurs.
Dato
Paduka Haji Hamdillah hopes that relevant authorities will extend
assistance to the innovators in marketing and developing further their
respective products.
Later, His Royal Highness officially
launched the CIPTA Inauguration and Award Ceremony 2005.
His Royal Highness then presented the
prizes to the winners.
In Category A for Creative or
Innovative Products, the winner was Awang Mat Japar bin Awang Karim
with his product "Portable Informer".
The Portable Informer is a simple and
inexpensive security device, which is easy to operate.
The winner received a cash prize of
$6,000 and a trophy.
The criteria for judging the projects
included novelty, originality or creativity of work, adaptability to
commercial product and process development, contribution to meeting
the human needs and impact of society, marketability and presentation.
In Category B for Innovative
Modification to an existing Product, Process or Technology, the prize
went to Keeran Janin with his "Vinyl Audio Processor".
The system is a new method of
replicating digital audio effects achievable by using vinyl discs. The
winner in Category B also received $6,000 cash prize and a trophy.
Both categories require competitors
to submit their plans, designs and ideas, which has led to the design
and final development of the products.
His Royal Highness also received a
pesambah from Awang Dr Haji Kassim bin Haji Daud, the Acting Director
of Institut Teknologi Brunei.
Doa
selamat was read by Yang Di-Muliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Setia
Diraja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaili.
The Crown Prince then viewed the
Crown Prince CIPTA Awards Showcase Exhibition.
CIPTA
has already attracted a number of highly talented youths with
promising ideas, since its introducton in 2003.
This is the first time Brunei is
holding a competition that supports innovation and creativity.
The Crown Prince CIPTA Awards will be
held on a biennial basis and is intended to cover all areas of
science, technology and engineering, including civil, mechanical,
electrical, electronic, computer, microprocessors and chemical
