Defence Cross-Examines First Witness In Corruption Case
By Rol Ezam

Bandar Seri Begawan - The trial proceedings against Pg Dr Hj Ismail, Brunei's former Minister of Development, and his alleged co-respondent, Wong Tim Kai, continued yesterday in the High Court.

Yesterday's trial saw Mr Christopher Femando, Malaysian counsel for Pg Dr Hj Ismail, cross-examining the first witness for the prosecution, Hj Mohd Jumin bin Hj Marsal who, at the time of the alleged offence, was holding the position of the Acting Director of Development of Public Works Department.

Hj Mohd Jumin was questioned on his involvement in the Project 1 (Kg Tungku Phase III Housing Package 3) and Project 3 (Kg Lambak Kanan, Landless Citizens Scheme).

One of the issues raised by the defence counsel during the cross-examination was whether the financial regulations covered every project and whether certain projects could be exempted from financial regulation.

Hj Mohd Jumin then confirmed that only certain projects could be exempted from the financial regulation, provided there is consent from His Majesty the Sultan.

Mr Christopher Fernando will cross-examination again on Monday Hj Mohd Jumin before the turn of Wong Tim Kai's counsel. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
