Bandar Seri
Begawan - A bus owned by Sunshine Tour & Travel parked in front
of the arrival hall of the Brunei International Airport caught fire
yesterday noon.
The fire started at the back of the
22-seater mid-sized Mitsubishi bus bearing plate number BL10.
Mr Akhlak,
the Indian driver, claimed that the bus engine was switched off when
the fire started.
Four members of the public found fire
extinguishers, but the blaze was too big to control to save the
burning vehicle.
We saw the coach's back on fire.
Together with another two persons we looked frantically for fire
extinguishers and found them far away, behind a toilet," said Yati.
She said she was waiting for family
members to arrive from Sydney at 11:55 am yesterday.
"By the time, we came back to the
coach with the fire extinguishers, the fire had engulfed half the
vehicle and it was too big to put out," she told the Bulletin.
"During the incident, a fire engine
came about 15 minutes after the mishap while a second one came five
minutes later.
"We could have saved the bus had we
found fire extinguishers in the vicinity," she said.
Meanwhile, the company that owned the
22-seater coach said it had some wiring repaired and had just come out
from the workshop a day before.
Two are engines from the Airport
branch assisted by eight personnel from the Berakas Fire Services were
at the fire scene.
Personnel from the Berakas police
station also responded. --
