By Saemah Zulkefli

Bandar Seri Begawan - The harvesting of 'Beras Pulut' or Pulut padi was held yesterday at Labi in the presence of Pehin Kapitan China Kornia Diraja Lau Ah Kok.

Also present was Dato Paduka Hj Md. Yussof bin Bakar, the Belait District Officer.

The Pulut padi was first planted in the country last October by Pehin Lau, who is the owner of Hua Ho Group.

The harvesting would take three days covering an area of more than 10 acres and involving 30 workers.

Besides Pulut padi, local padi was also planted near the site

Giving support to local businesses is one form of cooperation the people in this country can do to strengthen the country's economy, said Pehin Lau during a press conference at the paddy field in Kampong Labi yesterday.

The Government of His Majesty, he said, has implemented several projects to develop the various industries and business sector in the country to stimulate economic growth.

Thus, the people in the country should appreciate all the efforts taken by giving their full support to the government.

Pehin Lau said, to date, his company has 12 acres of land planted with Pulut padi, a padi variety from Taiwan and Japan.

Also known as Honlai, the padi has been planted extensively since last year and is now ready for harvesting and would be marketed soon.

More than 30 workers, both locals and foreigners, were employed to work at the paddy fields.

From his study and experience in the agricultural sector for more than 20 years, Pehin Lau said that the land in this country is suitable for planting certain padi varieties extensively.
