264 Primary Students Join Science Olympiad 2005

Bandar Seri Begawan – Two Hundred Sixty Four pupils from 89 primary schools throughout the country participated in the first round of the Second Primary School Science Olympiad 2005 yesterday morning.

In the Temburong district, it was held at the Sultan Hassan Primary school where 34 pupils from eleven government and non-government schools in the district took part.

The Primary School Science Olympiad (PSSO) is an hour-long annual competition, which tests the students’ knowledge and skills in science and elements of mathematics.

The competition has been held for the last two years in Indonesia during which Brunei won a silver and a bronze medals in Science. It is known as the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad.

The olympiad is organised by the Science, Technology and Environment Partnership Centre, Ministry of Education in cooperation with Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sendirian Berhad.

Meanwhile in the Belait Disrict, the contest was held at the Oil and Gas Discovery Center in Seria. Some 48 students from 16 primary schools in the district participated in the event.

The main objective of the contest is to motivate and develop the talents and skills of the students in science.

The top 20 per cent of contestants from this first round will qualify to the next round, which will be held on 16 March. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
