Sultan Tours New South Wales
University
Sydney -
His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan of Brunei, yesterday
visited the University of New South Wales in Sydney, one of His
Majesty's programmes in the state visit to Australia.
On arrival at the University of New
South Wales, His Majesty was greeted by Professor Mark Wainwright, the
Vice-Chancellor and the President of the University.
Also present was Pehin Dato Hj Abdul
Rahman, the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources.
At the Council Chamber His Majesty
the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei, Professor Wainwright
expressed his appreciation for His Majesty to take time to visit the
university.
He said the university is proud to
welcome His Majesty.
He also informed His Majesty about
the achievement and development of the University which has a student
population of about 40,000.
Professor John Ingleson, Deputy
Vice-Chancellor, in his briefing for His Majesty spoke about the
international strategic direction of the University.
According to Professor Ingleson, the
University itself has produced Brunei graduates in the various fields
over the years.
He said the University also
appreciates the Brunei decision to send their students to study here.
University of New South Wales is one
of the leading universities well known for new research and teaching
development.
It also noted for its research on
petroleum engineering. And for this reason, 15 young Bruneians are
studying in this field.
The top university officials told RTB
that they were very pleased and found gratifying that His Majesty the
Sultan of Brunei is a leader ready to meet the people.
They noticed with surprise how His
Majesty met and spoke to the Brunei students.
His Majesty's presence at the
University enabled him to see the various facilities and faculties of
the institution.
The Sultan's first stop is at the
Graduation Hall. Since its inception in 1949, the University has
produced some 140,000 graduates worldwide.
The University, which is also noted
for advanced researches in sciences, was also pleased to showcase to
His Majesty in these fields.
At the Centre of Excellence, His
Majesty was briefed on the research on silicon solar cell.
The other area of interest, which the
University showed to His Majesty, was the Centre of Excellency in
quantum computing technology.
His Majesty has shown great interest
in this subject as Brunei too is gearing towards modern sciences
especially the country is in the midst of diversifying its economy.
The Monarch spent more than one hour
at the University.
Brunei Students and the University
officials told RTB that they were proud of the visit and would always
cherish the occasion of meeting His Majesty.
