Local Writer Publishes New Edition Of `89 Book

Bandar Seri Begawan - Local writer Dr Hj Zaini Hj Ahmad recently published the latest edition of his 1989 book, Pertumbuhan Nasionalisme Di Brunei 1939-1962 (The Development of Nationalism in Brunei 1939-1962), to meet the demand in the globalisation era.

The book, which comprises of a documentary of historical events and personal accounts, is currently available at the Desa Cafe in Delima Desa Complex, Kg Serusop in Jalan Muara.

Priced at $12, Dr Hj Zaini described the new edition as "better organised ideas and contents" and believed many past incidents can be used as references to achieve a better understanding of the events in question.

The book unravels the development and growth of nationalism as well as political incidents not widely known to the public such as the 1962 uprising led by leader of Parti Rakyat Brunei (PRB) AM Azahari.

"The 1962 uprising was a fight for the independence of Brunei Darussalam. That was one of the objectives of the formation of PRB.

"PRB also objected to the inclusion of Brunei into a union of Malaysia," he said.

He offered various explanations on incidents that may have led to the uprising.

"If these allegations were true, then the December 8, 1962 rebellion failed because AM Azahari personally was not in Brunei to lead the uprising," he said in the book. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
