1st CIPTA Competition Set At ICC
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Around 20 projects of innovation will be put on
display at the first ever CIPTA Showcase and Exhibition at the
International Convention Centre (ICC) on Saturday, February 19.
The CIPTA (Creative Innovative
Product and Technological Advancement) Awards is a biennial
competition organised by the Institute of Technology of Brunei (ITB)
in partnership with Brunei Liquefied Natural Gas (BLNG).
The major sponsors of the
competition are BLNG and HSBC.
The CIPTA awards were created with
the intention of cultivating creativity and innovation within
Brunei, in order to promote national development. Many businesses,
both new and old, are expected to profit from this competition.
By providing a platform and giving
recognition to the pool of creative talent in Brunei, it is
envisioned that Brunei would join or even exceed the nations of
cutting edge technological advancement such as Japan and the US,
according to an ITB Information and Publicity Officer.
Behind the scenes, preparations for
this prestigious event are well underway. Several filming and photo
sessions have already taken place in the past week. More interviews
with various key officials of the CIPTA event would be carried out
over the next few days.
The exclusive CIPTA trophies are
currently safely kept under top-security in an undisclosed location.
Members of the public are invited
to have a look at the CIPTA exhibition, which will open from 9am to
6pm until February 21.
This would be a historic event, not
only for Brunei but also for creativity and innovation in Brunei.
Never before has Brunei seen a creative and innovative competition
at such a large scale and of such great importance.
The competition is divided into two
categories - 'Creative or innovative product, process or technology'
and the other, `Creative or innovative modification to an existing
product, process or technology'.
First place winner will be awarded
$6,000 cash and a CIPTA trophy. The second runner-up and other
runners-up will be awarded $4,000 and $2,000, respectively and a
trophy.
Consolation prizes of $500 and
certificates of appreciation will be awarded to other prize-worthy
projects.
Meanwhile, the prestigious Crown
Prince CIPTA Award, which carries a cash prize of up to $10,000,
will be awarded to the most outstanding overall project.
After winning, a wealth of
opportunity opens up for the products and their inventors. For
example, a suitable project, product or process having potential for
any commercial, public use or beneficial environmental effect,
identified during the competition may be recommended to relevant
authorities like BINA for further sponsorship, research and
development.
Members of the public are welcome
and encouraged to come and see the CIPTA Showcase and Exhibition,
and be part of history in the making at ICC from February 19-21.
