EmpireArt Gallery's Vision Of
Borneo
By Helena M Mahathir & James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Art enthusiasts in Brunei would not want to miss
the opportunity to visit an exhibition featuring the remarkable
works of two renowned artists, Herwig Bayerl from Austria and Lena
Bosch of Germany.
The works of these two popular
artists are currently being showcased at the EmpireArt Gallery until
February 27.
It is open Tuesday to Sunday from
11am to 5pm. Its opening ceremony was held Tuesday night with the
guests comprising of foreign dignitaries as well as local artists.
Entitled `The Fruits of the Rainbow
Tree - A Vision of Borneo', the landscapes (or Geotopes as Mr Bayerl
prefers to label them) and figures depict their imaginary views of
Brunei, having never visited before this.
They are currently in the Sultanate
to discover for themselves the wonders they have so far only dreamed
of and represented in their art pieces.
Their greatest hope is to have a
chance to meet some of the local artists and learn from them those
insights the naked eye sometimes fail to detect.
They then hope to produce further
works reflecting this new experience. There are plans to reveal one
or two of these during the closing ceremony scheduled for February
24 at 5.30pm in the same venue and will of course be open to the
public.
Herwig Bayerl and Lena Bosch were
invited to the country by Hubertus Powroslo, an avid art collector,
for the exhibition as a collaboration project with Jose Freitas
Cruz, who is currently helping out at the EmpireArt Gallery as an
Artistic Director. --
