Brunei Bans Keanu Reeves’ ‘Constantine’
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan - Keanu Reeves' new film "Constantine" has been banned by Brunei in accordance with the guidelines of the screen board.

Dato Paduka Hj Ahmad bin Kadi, Secretary of the board, told the Borneo Bulletin that he was not empowered to give reasons for the ban.

"Please write a formal letter to the head of the board if you wish to know the reasons for the ban," he said.

He said the ban was a collective decision of the committee based on the guidelines being given to the board.

He said the board found the film unsuitable for public viewing. "Constantine" is an apocalyptic thriller that depicts demon possessions, visions of hell and a renegade angel.

The film, which premieres in the US tomorrow (Friday), is steeped in Roman Catholic mythology. It features Reeves as a chain-smoking exorcist, who dispatches demons to the underworld in the hope of erasing a mortal sin he once committed.

"Constantine" was shown last week in Malaysia where the censor board there edited out several curse words. It rated the movie as having 'non-excessive violent and horrifying scenes'. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
