Brunei To Launch Big Makan Food
Festival
By Izam S. Ya'akub
Bandar Seri
Begawan - With this year's Big Makan Food Festival less then
ten days away, a few of the participating vendors have been kind
enough to give the Bulletin a sneak preview of what to expect at the
food festival.
The main attraction will be the
Sheraton Utama Hotel's longest "Pizza John".
Chef Dian Pamungkas and Chef Nova
Akhbar stated that it will be a hybrid of the local Roti John
offered by many hawkers in the tamu.
The difference between the two lies
in the ingredients used. Sheraton Utama uses ingredients such as
black olives, paprika, cheddar cheese, capsicum, which is where the
`Pizza' moniker comes from.
Chef Nova and Chef Dian's team of
eight will begin preparing the sections of the dish at Sam and hope
to have everything prepared by Gam for the launch of the Big Makan
Food Festival at 8am.
The 250 loaves used to make the
`Pizza John' has taken almost a month to coordinate and they hoped
that the target of 111 metres will be met.
Another participant in this year's
food festival is La Mee restaurant, who specialises in fresh
authentic hand-pulled noodles, pancakes and dumplings.
Hand-pulled noodles or "Mee Tarik"
is unique and can be made only by a trained cook. La Mee's Chef Fu
will be on hand during the second day of the food festival to
demonstrate the technique of preparing the noodles.
It can be served with a variety of
dishes, such as Chef Fu's secret Chinese Herb Soup or with local
dishes like Soto or Tom Yam Soup.
Local favourites will also be on
the menu at La Mee's booth such as Kolomee, Butter Prawns, Mee Mamak
and many more.
Food is not the only thing that
will be seen at the food festival. Maktab Teknik Sultan Saiful Rizal
(MTSSR) is also preparing to showcase and demonstrate the art of
napkin folding. --
