ENT Seminar Mulls Beating Common
Allergies

Begawan - An Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) seminar was held at
the premises of the Chancellor Building, Universiti Brunei
Darussalam yesterday.
It was jointly organised by the
Institute of Medicine, Universiti Brunei Darussalam and Schering
Plough.
Professor Dr Lokman Saim, Professor
and Senior Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist Dean, Faculty of
Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, was present to give a
presentation on disorders of the ear, nose and throat as well as the
management of hearing loss.
Flu, sinusitis, and cancer are
among the types of nose illnesses. The common cause of these
allergies may come from dusts, house mites, animal furs, flower
pollen, food and many more.
He advised to reduce the common
cause of nose allergies one should minimise the amount of dust found
in the house such as from house carpets, bed mattresses, duvets,
fans whereby they are required to be clean, and also by avoiding
close contact with the things that causes nose allergies.
Nasonex,
Beconase, Nasacort and Rhinocort are various types of steroids
sprays, which are safe to use. Among the signs of sinusitis are nose
congestion, swollen of the cheeks, forehead, eyes, feeling pain on
the cheeks and forehead when bending down.
Treatments for sinusitis are by the
intake of antibiotics or operation. Among the major signs of nose
illness are that one part of the nose is congested for a long time
and the nose that is infected with pus.
He also stated on the management of
hearing loss, that among the causes of deafness are ear infections,
deafness since childbirth, exposure to loud sounds and old-aged.
Moreover, he explained that the
community should be aware of the initial signs of the illnesses in
order to get the correct treatment and to avoid severe and total
deafness. --
