Locally Produced Children’s Books
To Come Off Press Soon

Begawan – The Language and Literature Bureau signed agreements
with ten local writers to publish a number of academic and children’s
books yesterday.
The agreements were parts of the
effort the Language and Literature Bureau initiated to uphold the
sovereignty of the Malay language, not just locally but regionally.
Awang
Haji Sumadi bin Sukaimi, the Acting Director of the Language and
Literature Bureau, the local market has been flooded with children
books from abroad.
A total of nine children’s books will
be published by the Language and Literature Bureau.
Among the books to be published will
focus on medicinal benefits of local herbs entitled "Perubatan Herba
Masyarakat Melayu Brunei".
According to its author, Dayang Mas
Irun binti Alli, she deliberately uses local words and phrases in her
book to expose and promote the identity and heritage of the
Brunei-Malay culture.
She said for her book, she did a lot
of research by collecting data and information through interviews and
familiarised herself with the world of medicinal herbs.
Currently, all the books are in the
third proof-reading stage.
In 2004, the Language and Literature
Bureau produced 41 local books altogether.
