Tsunami Charity Fund-Raising
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Brunei, writers
and artists are set to rally together to show their solidarity,
sympathy and care towards contributing to the tsunami victims
through a project to be launched on February 8 at the Sarmayuda
Hall, DBP, Berakas at 9am.
Sid Zaleha Hj Kaprawi, the DBP's
Public Affairs Officer, said the charity project will include sales
of books, magazines, and the publication of a book comprising
incidents of tsunami as well as poems by local poets, illustrations
and tsunami songs, and anthology of poems by poets, whose proceeds
will be donated to the fund.
She added that the sale of books
would be held from February 8 to 19 at DBP, Berakas.
The sale will then be continued
during the 10-day Book Fair 2005 at the Indoor Stadium, Hassanal
Bolkiah Sports Complex, Berakas, which will start on February 25.
Local writers, artists and
composers will again give free contributions for the publication of
the book, which will be sponsored by 5 local printers.
The proceeds from the sale of books
will go to the Tsunami Humanitarian Disaster Fund.
At the February 8 launch, local
VIPs who are literature activists will also be reciting their poems,
apart from contributing their literary works for the tsunami book.
Ustaz Hj Ismuhadi of Pusat Dakwah
Islanuah, Ministry of Religious Affairs, will also deliver a
religious talk on tsunami.
Siti Zaleha said local artists
would also sell their art works during the launch towards the
tsunami fund.
She said the scale of devastation
that resulted from the earthquake and tsunami in many nations of the
northern Indian Ocean, and especially in Aceh, has caught the
sympathy of DBP, its writers and artists.
"The sheer number of lives lost
have left much of us in a state of deep personal anguish and
psychological stress.
"DBP, its writers and artists also
wish to join the massive assistance given by individuals, civil
societies, corporations, international organisations and governments
around the world to help the victims.
"It may not be much but it is our
own way of contributing towards the fund and help in the
reconstruction," she added. --
