In a freak accident, a Fire
Services Department personnel lost three of his fingers on his
right hand.
The incident happened Wednesday
along Jalan Lumut Bypass. As the fireman was attending to a
bush-fire there was a mystery explosion that severed his
fingers.
The 23-year-old fireman is
currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Suri Seri Begawan
Hospital in Kuala Belait. A police spokesperson confirmed this
to the Bulletin adding that a thorough investigation is on to
find out the cause of the explosion.
The source also added the
detailed account of the explosion was only known from the victim
as he regained consciousness on Thursday morning after
undergoing an operation.
The explosion reportedly took
place at about 1pm on Wednesday during a smoke control and fire
extinguishing operation along Jalan Lumut Bypass.
The police source said that
they did not find any signs of explosion on the ground when they
conducted on site investigation. However, they managed to find
the three fingers of the victim.
Another source told the
Bulletin that the victim was one of the team members deployed to
carry out an operation about 50 metres inside the jungle.
They were creating a passage
for the water hoses to be taken in by removing chunks of wood
and trunks when the victim was said to be holding something
which later exploded.
The rest of his team members
rushed to the scene only to discover the victim writhing in pain
and his right hand bleeding. The victim was immediately rushed
to the hospital. The victim's condition is reported to be
stable.
