Users Of Traditional Medicines Be
Warned
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Users of five traditional medicines found to contain
certain substances are advised to destroy or surrender them to the
Pharmacy Enforcement Section on Jalan Ong Sung Ping in Bandar Seri
Begawan.
These traditional medicines are Majun
Dua Istimewa with white label, Majun Dua Istimewa with yellow label,
Jamu Jawa Asli Sehat Segar, Jamu Ampuh Jaya Kencing Manis and Pil
Haruan.
Pharmaceutical Chemists of the Drug
and Poison Information, Dayang Asma Atiya said that these medicines
have been found to contain substances, which are controlled under the
Poisons Act.
Reading a media release from the
Health Ministry yesterday, she said that consumption of 'phenylbutazone'
may lead to hearing disturbance, shortness of breathe, swelling of
face or lower leg and blood disorder.
Long-term unsupervised consumption of
'dexamethasone' may lead to serious adverse effects such as irregular
heartbeats, muscles weakness, bone fracture, swelling of the lower leg
and an increase in risk cough infection.
Unsupervised consumption of 'chlorpheniramine'
may cause dizziness, lowering of blood pressure, confusion in
coordination and drowsiness while the consumption of 'theophylline'
may lead to nostalgia and vomiting, diarrhoea, tiredness, nervousness
and convulsion.
Unsupervised consumption of 'phenobarbitone'
may lead to drowsiness, loss of appetite, muscle or joint pain, and
shortness of breath and chest pain.
It is an offence under the Poisons
Act to sell any product containing a substance controlled under the
Poisons Act without any authorisation from the Health Ministry.
The penalty of such offence upon
conviction is a fine of $8,000 or six months in jail.
Those who have purchased the products
are advised to destroy or surrender them to the Pharmacy Enforcement
Section, Block 2G, 7th Floor, BSB House Centre, Jalan Ong Sung Ping,
Bandar Seri Begawan.
