Sultan Urges Iraq To Show Maximum
Cooperation With UN
Kuala Lumpur -
His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei has joined other leaders in urging
Iraq to continue every thing they can to work with the UN Security
Council to demonstrate maximum compliance.
The Sultan outlined Brunei's position
on the Iraq Crisis at the Informal Consultation among leaders of
countries in the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) in Kuala
Lumpur on Wednesday.
He said the ultimate aim of all
resolutions on Iraq was to enable current sanctions to be lifted so as
to enable the Iraqis to rebuild their lives and live in peace and
prosperity.
In this situation on the Middle East,
the Brunei ruler stated that "the only key in enduring stability
and peace in the region is a just settlement in Palestine".
His Majesty said that members of the
OIC must continue to state this firmly and urge each member of the
International Quartet consisting of the United Nations, the Russian
Federation, the United States and the European Union to renew every
effort to achieve such a settlement.
"In doing so it would show that
the great powers in the UN Security Council truly have the OIC's
interest at heart and furthermore would demonstrate that there is
indeed a global process of international law," the Brunei ruler
said.
The Sultan emphasised that in order
to achieve lasting long-term results, the focus of debate on the
problem is the United Nations.
His Majesty further reiterated the
vital importance of diplomacy and due process of international law
based on the United Nations Charter.
He expressed full confidence on the
role of the UN Security Council, which has the final judgement in the
issue at hand.
The informal consultation was held to
exchange views on current developments in the Middle East and other
issues of importance through the Muslim Ummah.
Accompanying His Majesty was Brunei
Foreign Affairs Minister His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah.
Malaysian Prime Minister Dato Dr
Mahathir chaired the informal consultation.
A special summit of the OIC is due to
convene in Doha, Qatar on March 5, 2003.
