Unauthorised humps spark public outcry

By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Members of the public voiced their concern over the sudden appearances of road humps over some public roads in several neighbourhoods, which they allege was constructed without the consent of the relevant agency.

They understood the need to protect the neighbourhoods from traffic impacts while maintaining excellent access to businesses in the community through the common type of traffic calming improvement, by installing road humps in many residential neighbourhoods.

Officials at the Road Section, Public Works Department said that such construction of road humps without prior permission from the relevant authority is never allowed. However, they need to scrutinise the alleged areas before they could tell whether such construction was done without such approval.

"We were concerned about road humps constructed only a few feet apart in between the boundary of a house while the road is meant for public use," said one of the officials.

"We understand the need to slow down vehicles but if all the houses on the street have humps then they became unnecessary burden to the public, not to mention the long-term damage it would cause to vehicles."
