Many people watched in horror as a small boy was nearly carried
away by a giant advertising balloon he was playing with at Taman
Sir Hj Omar Ali Saifuddien in the capital several nights ago.
The child was playing with one
of the large balloons featured at the Taman for the 19th
National Day celebration when the rope holding the balloon to
the ground broke.
However, timely intervention by
elderly people saved the boy from being flown high into the sky.
The balloons are actually
advertisements put up by establishments to support the 19th
National Day celebration.
A bystander said, "The boy
was lifted several feet off the ground and he was about to be
taken up high when he shouted for help.
"Luckily elderly people
managed to hold the balloon to the ground before tying it
back."
He said the matter had been
rectified and children could no longer play with the big
balloons.
"The balloons are now
attached to long metal posts so children cannot reach them now.
"The balloons can easily
carry a child weighing more than 15 kg into the air," he
said.
He alleged that prior to the
incident he witnessed children getting entangled in the string
that secure the balloons to the ground.
"It is not a laughing
matter and very dangerous for the children. We are glad the
balloons are now out-of-reach for children," he said.
The Taman is a popular
playground for children as it is still lit up and open to the
public.
