His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam
held bilateral meetings with five heads of delegation on the
sidelines of the 13th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM)
in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
First to have a bilateral
meeting was Hamid Karzai, President of the Islamic State of
Afghanistan. Following that His Majesty then met with Xanana
Gusmao, President of the Democratic Republicof Timor-Leste.
This was followed by a
four-eyes meeting with Rafiq al-Hariri, the Prime Minister of
the Republic of Lebanon. His Majesty then received Seyyed
Mohammad Khatami, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran and
lastly met with the Vice-President of the Syrian Arab Republic,
Abdul Halim Khaddam.
During those bilateral
meetings, His Majesty discussed bilateral matters and exchanged
views on regional and international issues of common concern.
All five meetings were held at the Putera World Trade Centre.
Present at the audiences were
His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign
Affairs of Brunei Darussalam; Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya
Laila Setia Bakti Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa,
Special Adviser to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of
Brunei Darussalam at the Prime Minister's Office and Minister of
Home Affairs; Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato
Seri Paduka Awang Haji Yahya, Permanent Secretary, Prime
Minister's Office; and Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma
Dewa Dato Seri Paduka Lim Jock Seng, Permanent Secretary,
Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Earlier on, His Majesty
consented to join other NAM Leaders for a group photograph
session which was later followed by a luncheon hosted by Yang
Amat Berhormat Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister of
Malaysia.
The 13th NAM Summit was
attended by more than fifty Heads of State or Government of the
NAM. The Movement which was established in 1955 is a grouping of
116 developing countries. Two new members were admitted at the
current Summit namely, Timor-Leste and St. Vincent and the
Grenadines.
The 13the NAM Summit is
expected to adopt two main documents namely the Final Document,
which will outline the common position of the Movement on
various issues on its agenda and the Kuala Lumpur Declaration,
which will focus on "Continuing the Revitalisation of the
Non-Aligned Movement", the theme of this year's Summit.
This year's Summit will also
review international political and economic situation and the
role of the Non-Aligned Movement in the 21st Century.
At the end of the Summit today,
the Heads of State or Government are expected to issue a
separate Statement on Iraq.
His Majesty joined other NAM
Leaders last night at a dinner hosted by Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir
Mohamad, the Prime Minister of Malaysia. The dinner was held in
one of the leading hotels in Kuala Lumpur.
Brunei Darussalam became a
member of the NAM in 1992 at its Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The previous NAM Summit was held in Durban, South Africa in
September 1998.
Accompanying His Majesty to
this 13th NAM Summit was His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed
Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Darussalam, who
was in Kuala Lumpur to attend the NAM Ministerial meetings.
