Curbs on SMS while driving
By Azaraimy HH

Using the Short Messaging System (SMS) while driving is one of the issue being discussed by the country's traffic enforcement regulators and agencies such as the Land Transport Department and the Traffic Police. This issue could be included on the new tougher traffic rules and regulations expected to be enforced soon.

Hj Suaib Hj Md Taib, Chief of Legal and Enforcement said yesterday, "is one of the issue that is going to be included in the new traffic gazette".

However, he have not spell out the penalties for offenders.

The country's traffic enforcement regulators are now gazetting a tougher regulation to stand up against the high incidence of accidents in the country.

According to the Land Transport Department the new rules and regulations are now on the finalising stage.

Many people have agreed to this measure, but said receiving or sending SMS while being stationery at the traffic-light junction is fine as long as the user stops when the lights turn green.

Voice call users are reminded to use hands-free car kit sets that enable motorists to answer calls automatically.

But many had also said with the move to make illegal SMS while driving, mobile phone operators should offer a voice-activated dialling system.

However, DSTCom Sdn Bhd, sole mobile phone operator here, said the voice-activated dialling system is available on certain mobile phones.
