Failure to pay fine lands man in jail

An Indian man who stayed in Brunei unlawfully for 1,217 days was yesterday fined $1,200 or a month in custody before Magistrate Faisal Pehin Dato Hj Keiflie. However, he failed to pay the fine. According to Immigration Prosecutor, Moharefandi Hj Md Tahir, the defendant, Thayar Sulthan Jahubar, 22, was arrested at one workers quarters located at Simpang 158, Kg Delima Satu on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant.

The defendant was arrested two days ago on joint operation conducted by Police officers from the Berakas Police Station and Immigration Officers from the Enforcement Division.

Investigations revealed that on October 3, 1999 the defendant had last arrived in Brunei and was granted an employment pass valid for 3 weeks.

Ever since that the defendant's employment pass had never been extended until the date of his arrest, the Immigration prosecutor said.
