Liquor-Tossing Malaysian Fined For
Smuggling

Begawan - The story of the 37-year-old liquor tossing Malaysian
smuggler who threw out brandy and whiskey out of his car while in hot
pursuit was told in the Brunei Magistrates court yesterday.
Senior Magistrate Hj Abdullah Soefri
heard that Brunei Customs Preventive officers ordered Zamri Mat Isa to
stop his car on February 15 at Kammpong Junjungan near the Brunei
capital but he sped off tossing the bottles of liquor out of the car
window.
The statement of facts Royal Customs
and Excise Department Prosecuting Officer, Hj Ahmad Hj Abd Rahman,
tendered in court revealed that a group of Customs Preventive Officers
conducting an operation at Kg Junjungan on February 15 tailed a
vehicle registered BK 8167, which Zamri Mat Isa drove.
Other "eyeball" customs
officers on the looked out had earlier tipped the customs party off
The car was ordered to stop, but instead sped off while the contraband
items were tossed out of the window, the court heard.
Zamri was later apprehended when they
found the car hidden at the Sports Complex Power Station in Kg Sg Asam.
Zamri said the two bottles of
smuggled Bacardi and a bottle of Johnnie Walker Red Label, belonging
to him were thrown out by a passenger during the chase. Zamri fined
$1,000 or 2 months jail in default.
The Senior Magistrate ordered for the
car, which belonged to a friend to be returned to the rightful owner.
The liquors were worth $44 and
