Suspected Food Poison Drama In
Mabohai School
By Salawati Hj Yahya and Rafidah Jumat
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Pandemonium broke out when nineteen students from
Mabohai Primary School in the Brunei capital yesterday suffered severe
bouts of vomiting and diarrhea believed to be symptoms of food
poisoning.
It is understood that they ate egg
sandwiches and had hot drinks the school supplied through the Ministry
of Education feeding scheme.
At about 10am yesterday morning, an
hour after the recess hour, students from primary one to six
complained of stomachache to their teachers while some vomited.
As the situation became worrisome six
students were rushed to the nearby health centre for immediate
treatment.
According to a source at the health
centre, after examination, the centre instructed several of its
officers to go to the school to attend to the rest of the students.
The school's hall was immediately
transformed into a medical examination area so that the medical team
could check other affected students efficiently.
A father of a sick student who
contacted the Borneo Bulletin said when he went to the school to pick
up his child when there were about ten students who were still
suffering from vomiting and diarrhea and were seen queuing up waiting
to be treated.
However, the school's headmaster when
contacted by the press said the situation was not so serious. He said
it did not affect the general health of the students as according to
him the food poisoning only hit nine students.
The medical team also inspected the
kitchen and took samples of the suspected food and drinks.
The Bulletin also spoke to several
teachers of the school who said that about 19 students were affected
by alleged food poisoning and one went pale with severe stomachache an
hour after having the suspected food and drink.
The medical team who were deployed
also confirmed that a total of 20 students were given treatment and
six students were rushed to the nearby Ong Sum Ping health centre
earlier after complaining of stomachache, vomiting and diarrhea. (Courtesy of Borneo
