Get approval to travel abroad, civil servants told

By Rosli Abidin Yahya

As the sun was about to set, a large number of sundowners parked their vehicles at Kuala Lurah and walked towards the control posts before locating themselves at their favourite restaurant and café on the other side of the border.

A retired army officer said unfortunately the sundowners also included active civil servants who found relief there after a day of hard work. "I just want to warn the sundowners who are civil servants," he said.

"Ensure that you all have permission to go out of the country otherwise you can get into trouble for violating the general order of your employment." he said.

He said civil servants need at least a two-week notice from their departments to go out of the country. "I know some of my friends are not doing so. For them it is so easy, just bring your passport and cross the border. It is hard to overcome the lure," he said.

He said they might think it is impractical to ask permission to go out of the country since they make the trips on daily basis.

He added there are some departments which give long-term permission for the civil servants to leave the country any time they like. "But this is for civil servants who are married to border town women." He said failure to apply permission to go abroad may cause civil servants their jobs.
