| The Temburong
district will soon have a new terminal jetty in Pekan Bangar,
RTB reported yesterday. The present jetty and the surrounding
areas are now in a bad condition partly due to soil erosion.
The issue of the deteriorating
jetty was raised during a question and answer session between
the Minister of Communication and penghulus, kampong ketuas and
heads of longhouses in Temburong Wednesday.
At the gathering, the
Minister’s delegation was briefed on the condition of the
jetty which was in need of repair.
In response to the issue, an
official from the marine department, Pengiran Abdul Rahman
clarified that the project in the area would not only deal with
the landslide problem but also the construction of a new jetty
terminal building. The project was scheduled to begin after the
Chinese New Year.
In addition to the project, the
Temburong District will join the other Districts in the new
7-digit numbering system which takes effect next month.
The telephone service in
Temburong District began in the mid-fifties. In 1965 such
service was only confined in government offices before a
three-digit telephone numbers was introduced two years later.
In 1980, 5-digit numbering
system was introduces while the new six-digit numbering system
was used since last October.
Now, 99 per cent of the
residential areas in the district have been provided with
telephone lines by Jabatan Telekom Brunei (JTB). In 2001, JTB
carried out a project in rural areas. The project involved
installing transmitters in Kampong Sumbiling Baru, Selapon Baru
and Lapong Baru.
To date, the JTB has provided 6
more transmitters in areas that include Bangar, Labu, Rataie and
three rural areas.
The Department also provides
personal telephone services to the public, public phones,
internet services, leased lines, private wires, pagers and fax.
Other services also include
public phone booths, phone cards, telephone bill payments and
the installation of telephone lines.
JTB is also to provide a
pre-paid card for normal telephone services and short message as
well as replacing overhead cables with underground ones.
Now, some 2000 users in the
Temburong District have been registered with various
telecommunication services.
