By Malai FadleyRizal

A 36-year-old Security officer at the Fisheries Department was imposed a $3,000 fine or 3 months jail in default for smuggling contraband items into the Sultanate. The car in which he conveyed the items were ordered to be forfeited and the items were to be destroyed by the relevant authorities yesterday.

Kamsul bin Kurus was detained by a group of Customs Officers after they were alerted by their colleagues who were also conducting an operation at the vicinity of Kg Bebuloh on February 6, 2003.

The officers found 480 cans of Tiger beer in his car on that morning which was estimated at $700 while customs duty due to be paid was $476.

Kamsul admitted during investigations while being detained that the beer was his and that it was for sale to his friends and some for own consumption.
