$30,000 prize money awaits LiveWIRE winners on February 8

By Dk Maznah Pg Badarudin

The LiveWIRE Awards 2002, the Business Awards Competition for young people in Brunei Darussalam, reach a climax on the evening of Saturday, 8 February 2003.

The ceremony will be held at the Empire Hotel and Country Club where Prince Abdul Qawi, the Executive Vice Chairman of QAF Brunei Sdn Bhd is expected to present the awards.

Cash prizes of more than $30,000 and an incentive tour are up for grabs for the two categories and the winners will only be known that night. Four finalists from Category A which is the business plan awards category and another four for Category B, the business start up awards category, made it to the final.

Category A for participants under 31 years of age as on 31 December 2002, is further divided into four sub-categories;

A1. Upper Secondary
A2. Institutions of Higher Learning
A3. LiveWIRE course participants
A4. Open Category

Category B participants had to have their business running for more than six months but less than five years and they must also be below 31 years old when they started their businesses. An SME Special Award in a form of a plaque will also be presented. This is an award for an SME that is deemed to be very successful during its five years operations.

The competition, organised by LiveWIRE-Brunei and co-sponsored by Brunei Shell Petroleum Co Sdn Bhd and HSBC, attracted nearly 40 entries in both categories.

According to LiveWire Brunei, the response was very good compared to the first time the competition was held which attracted more than ten entries. The awards closing date was extended for two weeks from 31 October 2002 as some of the participants were students and needed time to prepare for their examinations then.

Judging for the entries was done last month with interviews for category A and site visits to the business premises of the participants for category B. The LiveWIRE Awards are designed to recognise and reward young people who are successful in a business activity and to promote them as role models for other young people.

The competition is an integral part of the LiveWIRE programmes around the world. This is the second time such a competition is held in Brunei Darussalam, the first was held in 2001.
