By Zan Hosni

Children give an energetic performance

Once again, the season for Pongal Kalai Vizha has come upon us. Members of the Bandar Seri Begawan Indian Association gathered at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas, Sunday night to celebrate the season for the rice harvest known as ‘Pongal’. This festival is celebrated for 3 days in welcoming the coming of the harvest.

The first day, the Bhogi Pongal is celebrated before sunrise. A bonfire is lit and all useless household items are thrown into the flames.

This symbolises the start of a fresh new year. ‘Kolam’ designs are also drawn with white paste of newly harvested rice and the outlines of the design are drawn with red mud.

A welcoming speech was made by the Chairman of the Pongal Kalai Vizha committee – Dr K C Rajaraman, followed by a speech given by Dr P S Sugathan – President of the Bandar Seri Begawan Indian Association.

The night’s programme was filled with colourful and talented performances.

The children’s group performed an enchanting dance and had the audience clapping vigourously at the end.
