Dato Paduka Awg. Hj Abd Majid in officiating JKR’s very first
seminar yesterday

The Public Work Department (JKR)
has taken steps to call all its employees to sharpen and direct
its vision towards excellence by holding their very first
seminar yesterday, which focused on the theme “Shaping JKR for
2006”.
Officiating the opening
ceremony of the seminar was Dato Paduka Awg Hj Abd Majid bin Hj
Abd Rahim, Permanent Secretary (Administration and Finance) at
the Ministry of Development, who was warmly welcomed by Awg Pg
Hj Othman bin Pg Hj Omar, Acting Director General of Public
Works.
In his capacity as the Chairman
of the Organising committee, Awg Pg Hj Othman hoped that the
“seminar will act as a platform to encourage and cultivate
participation in the writing of their works; to induce a writing
culture among the technical and non-technical officials; to
extract a solution towards the development and achievement of
excellence; and to induce steps in the formation of a Research
and Development (R&D) department.”
“With the seminar as the
platform, we will progress towards the ‘Shaping JKR for
2006’, in which the year 2006 will be the celebration of the
‘Centennial Event JKR’, to mark the 100th Anniversary of JKR,”
he added.
Dato Paduka Awg Hj Abd Majid,
stated in his speech that it is “timely for the professionals
under JKR to embark into academic directions that would be
particularly useful for the nation and specifically for the
department and ministry.”
He also highlighted the
“important role of the Research and Development Department, in
producing products of high quality and standards, as evident in
developed countries. In this relation, with the formation of an
R&D department, JKR, as one of the oldest and largest
departments in the nation, will be able to evaluate their human
resource development programme.
“Currently, JKR is planning
to enhance the management aspect of the human energy resource or
HRM into a more comprehensive programme.”
He also disclosed that “there
are a total of eighty-two local senior officials who have
successfully acquired a certification of their profession, and
that a majority of the local staffs have the technical know-how
skills.” The one-day seminar, held at the International
Convention Centre (ICC), comprised of fifteen working papers,
each, represented by either engineers or senior officials from
each different department under JKR.
The seminar started off with a
presentation by Awg Pg Mohd Salleh Pg Hj Kamaluddin, Director of
Administration and Finance, on a special paper entitled
‘Shaping JKR for 2006’, that was attended by a total of four
hundred participants comprising of senior officials and
officials from different departments of JKR.
