Scene at the Kuala Belait Temple
Chinese New Year kicked off
with hundreds of people from Kuala Belait and Seria walking on
the streets that lead to the Kuala Belait Temple on New Year’s
Eve.
Chinese worshippers came to the
temple to pray for fortune, health and prosperity for the Year
of the Goat.
Police officials were also
present to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and that no illegal
activities or fireworks were being held.
Celebrations in Kuala Belait
were also done in the form of dinners for family reunion being
held in either homes or restaurants on New Year’s eve. This is
usually followed by visits to relatives’ homes, which usually
goes on for fifteen days.
Colourful Chinese attire were
worn by many. On the first day, most Chinese people was seen
wearing red to welcome the New Year.
Other Chinese traditions, such
as bringing a pair of oranges when visiting other houses as a
symbol of good luck for the New Year are also still practised.
