Chinese New Year kicked off with hundreds of people from Kuala Belait and Seria walking on the streets that lead to the Kuala Belait Temple on New Year’s Eve.

Chinese worshippers came to the temple to pray for fortune, health and prosperity for the Year of the Goat.

Police officials were also present to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and that no illegal activities or fireworks were being held.

Celebrations in Kuala Belait were also done in the form of dinners for family reunion being held in either homes or restaurants on New Year’s eve. This is usually followed by visits to relatives’ homes, which usually goes on for fifteen days.

Colourful Chinese attire were worn by many. On the first day, most Chinese people was seen wearing red to welcome the New Year.

Other Chinese traditions, such as bringing a pair of oranges when visiting other houses as a symbol of good luck for the New Year are also still practised.
