Surrender Tagged Fish: Fisheries
Department
By Achong Tanjong
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Fisheries Department reminded the public,
especially fishermen, who happen to catch tagged fish to surrender
them to any of the Fisheries Department branches.
|
|
A reward of
B$5 per individual tagged fish will be given to anyone who
surrenders them to the department.
The tagging programme for
pelagic fish is a regional project participated by Brunei
Darussalam with the collaboration of the Southeast Asian
Fisheries Development Centre (SEAFDEC) based in Bangkok,
Thailand, starting from 2008-2011.
The department said the two
species, namely the round scad (ikan basong-basong) and
Indian mackerel (rumahan saki), are selected in the tagging
programme, as they are abundant in our waters.
|
|
The Department of
Fisheries, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources
implemented the tagging programme beginning August 2008.
According to the
department, 700 species of round scad and 700 of Indian
mackerel were tagged and released in Brunei waters.
|
Among the objectives of the tagging
programme are to collect information on the migration pattern of the
small pelagic fish in the waters of South China Sea, and to collect
additional information on the estimation of the sub population of
these species.
It is also aimed to determine the
shared stock of these fish in Asean, having similar water location
in South China Sea.
