GKN Promotes Solidarity Among
Co-Ops
By Hussin HJ
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Cooperatives are urged to give unequivocal support
and full commitment to Gabungan Koperasi National (GKN) as the
umbrella of sultanate's cooperative movement. This scheme is aligned
with one of the resolutions adopted in a national seminar held in
May this year.
"GKN is a symbol of solidarity for
cooperative movement. GKN will always continue to strife and if all
cooperatives become members, it will grow stronger and GKN will be
able to sustain the socio-economic well beings of its affiliates,"
stressed Pehin Orang Kaya Dewa Pahlawan Dato Paduka Haji Dani bin
Haji Ibrahim in his capacity as the President of GKN during a
meeting with head of cooperative leaders in the Tutong District. The
ceremony took place at Tutong Civic Centre on Dec 16, 2007.
"When we work together, we could
spot many quality and visionary leaders within our confines. With
that luxury in hand, we may able to choose and pick our future
leaders to spearhead GKN. If financial resources are the issues, the
accumulation of modal to run the projects could be funded by all its
members," Pehin Haji Dani said.
He added solidarity and cooperation
are two underlying factors that lead any establishment to
sustainability. He went to give examples of two prominent apex
bodies that campaign the aspirations and rights of cooperatives. For
Malaysia, it is governed by Angkasa (Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan
Malaysia) while Singapore National Cooperative Federation represents
Singapore where each apex body assists the development of its
members. To date GKN has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
with Angkasa in the fields of training and education.
"United we stand, divided we fall.
We help each other in accordance with our religious and nation
teachings. The bottom line is, are we prepared to unite and spur the
growth of co-operative movement in this country? To achieve
commendable outcomes, we ought to translate words with actions such
as becoming members to GKN. Negative elements that will undermine
the cooperative national aspiration need to be ward off
collectively," he said further. Yesterday's ceremony was also
attended by GKN top brass committee members, Pg Hj Tajuddin bin Pg
Hj Mohd Salleh, Acting Director of Brunei Industrial Development
Authority (BINA) as a personal representative to the Director of
BINA, GKN's Liasion Officer for Tutong District, Haji Yahya bin
Bendahari Haji Ghafar and some 30 Tutong's cooperative leaders.
A briefing on the role, function
and responsibility of GKN was delivered by Pehin Colonel (R) Dato
Paduka Haji Mandini Bin Dato Paduka Haji Basir, Vice President of
GKN. The ceremony was ended with a question and answer session.
Among the projects in the pipeline
undertaken taken by GKN is to setup a warehouse and wholesale
centre, filling station and loan repayment services. -- Courtesy of Borneo
