HM Warns Against Deviant Teachings
By Waleed PD Mahdini
Bandar Seri
Begawan - His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah
Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei
Darussalam has called on the citizens and people of Brunei
Darussalam to be on the vigilant alert for the possibility of the
revival of any banned deviant religious teachings.
His Majesty conveyed the reminder
in His titah to the nation via Radio Television. Brunei last night
in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidil Adha which is being celebrated
throughout the country today. His Majesty said although there is no
indication that this deviant teaching is getting a foothold in
Brunei, we should nevertheless continue to remain on constant guard.
Describing it as a virus that may
creep into the fabric of the society, His Majesty suggested that the
best method to contain it is through education. The kind of
education that the monarch is referring to is early education that
will not sideline religious subjects and studies.
Earlier in the titah, His Majesty
spoke at length on the 'aqidah or faith. A strong faith on Islam is
indeed a powerful defence mechanism against deviant teachings that
could easily permeate in the light of this globalised world where
all sorts of information is within easy reach of the society. Aqidah
according to the monarch is linked to the teachings that we
practice.
The logic, that His Majesty
believed in is that if the teaching is in the right path, then one's
'aqidah is therefore correct. On the other hand, if the teaching is
wrong, then one's 'aqidah is incorrect and misguided. The titah
which emphasised His Majesty's concern about 'aqidah and deviant
teaching came when there are reports about efforts to restore the
banned Islamic teaching that runs contrary to Brunei's Islamic faith
based on the Ahli Sunnah Wallamaah as enshrined in the Constitution
of Brunei Darussalam. -- Courtesy of
