Fire Rescue Dept Extra Vigilant In
Rainy Season
By Liza Mohd
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The country's Fire and Rescue Department is being
extra vigilant now in responding to emergency calls on flash floods,
uprooted trees or road accidents, in view of the continuous heavy
downpours and strong winds experienced nationwide.
Unlike the Brunei-Muara District
which has seen over 30 emergency calls per day, the situation in
Belait and Tutong seems to be under control, with only two or three
calls recorded respectively since Dec. 27 on rain-related mishaps.
An emergency call on a road
accident due to heavy showers was received recently by the Belait
Fire and Rescue Department at Kg Sungai Kayu Ara, Mukim Lumut,
causing some injuries to a passenger. The collision due to slippery
road conditions, which involved two salon vehicles, occurred in the
afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Tutong Fire and
Rescue Department received a distress call on an uprooted tree along
the Bukit Panggal Highway close to 5am recently, though no injuries
were reported.
A call on a similar incident was
also received on the same day, which occurred at Kg Keluyuh Sungai
Liang. No vehicles were damaged and no casualties reported as a
result of the mishap.
A family in Kg Kupang Tutong
yesterday morning complained of floodwaters entering their home.
However, it did not cause major damages to the house properties, as
the water level recorded was only eight centimetres, said a
firefighter.
Despite the few emergency calls in
both districts, firefighters are gearing up for continuous rainfalls
that are expected to take place until next week.
In the Brunei-Muara District, the
heavy downpours cause flooding and landslides to such an extent that
some assistance was required from the Public Works Department to
carry out clearing works.-- Courtesy of Borneo
